Etymology: The present ἐρωτάω, εἰρωτάω \< *ἐρϜωτάω, which esp. in Attic replaced primary (Ion.) εἴρομαι (s. v.) \< *ἔρϜ-ομαι, is an enlargement in -τ- ; the origin of the -ω- is unknown. For the type in gen. cf. on ἀρτάω and Schwyzer 705f. - Other secondary presents are ἐρεείνω and ἐρευνάω, s. vv.
